As the Department prepares for the start of the Public Inquiry into the Police shooting of Anthony Grainger it was concerning to see today a very similar incident involving West Yorkshire Police.

A man was shot dead during a “pre-planned” operation near to the M62 Motorway.  Pictures of the Audi motor vehicle involved in the incident are widely circulated amongst the Media and it appears that 3 bullet holes are present in the front windscreen of the car.  The IPCC are now investigating.

From experience of dealing with the Grainger case over a 5 year period the family of the deceased now face a long struggle to establish the true facts relating to the shooting.  The IPCC in the Grainger case caused incredible delay and their eventual report was unsatisfactory and was leaked to the Media before it was seen by the family of the deceased.  There was a potential criminal prosecution against the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police which further delayed matters and the Inquest into Anthony Grainger’s death was ultimately escalated to a full Public Inquiry which again resulted in delay.

The family of the deceased in the M62 shooting therefore face a long struggle to establish the truth behind what happened.
