Client N Recovers £75,000 Following Historic Abuse by Schoolteacher

Farleys’ specialist abuse law department acted on behalf of Client N, who was a pupil at a Lancashire School in the late 1980s.

Background

As a 14 year old, our client was groomed by a teacher. He would give her preferential treatment in class and write letters to her. As the grooming progressed he began touching her under the desk and kissing her. Eventually full sexual contact took place and the schoolteacher also engaged in oral sex with her.

As soon as rumours of the incident came out, our client’s parents contacted the school and the abuse ceased. Our client was eventually able to report the matter to the police, resulting in the conviction and sentencing of the teacher for the abuse. This was over 20 years ago.

How Farleys Were Able to Help

Farleys were instructed to being a claim against the Local Authority as a result of the abuse that our client had suffered and the significant impact this has subsequently had on her life. The claim was made against the Local Authority as they were legally responsible for the actions of the teacher.

Arguments were advanced such that the abuse had caused a long term psychiatric injury, which had had a significant impact on Client N’s life. It had affected her ability to work and had an impact on her relationships. She used alcohol as an inappropriate coping mechanism.

After a number of years of litigation, we were eventually able to secure an award of £75,000 for our client, following a joint settlement meeting with the Defendants, the Local Authority.
