Following the great courage of victims and witnesses, two former members of staff at Stubton Hall School were jailed in 2021 for offences including rape and sexual assault.
Stubton Hall School, near Caythorpe, was primarily a boarding school for children with special educational needs. It opened in 1952 as a boys’ school and became a school for both boys and girls in 1982. It was owned and managed by Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) from 1952 to 2003, when it closed.
Former deputy headmaster David Taylor, who was employed at Stubton Hall between 1975 and 1995, has been jailed for 19 years and six months. He has been found guilty of three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault against five girls. He will remain on the sex offenders register for life.
A former pupil has come forward alleging sexual and physical abuse by Taylor from the age of 10. She reports how he would kiss her, whilst other times show violence towards her. If she was naughty in class, she alleges that he would beat and restrain her, before throwing her into a small cupboard where she had to stay until he decided to release her.
In addition to Taylor, the school’s former head of care, Raymond Longley has also been convicted. He has been found guilty of four counts of indecent assault on a girl and has been jailed for four years. He was employed at Stubton Hall between 1982 and 1997 and was the main overnight carer for children who boarded there.
Heather Sandy, executive director for children’s services at LCC has stated the following:
“LCC expresses deep regret over the abuse suffered by the victims in this case.
We wish to apologise to the victims and are pleased justice has been done through the convictions in the criminal case.”
Stubton Hall School should have been a place of safety and protection for the vulnerable children in its care. Yet, both Taylor and Longley abused their positions of trust as employees of the school.
