Headway’s Action for Brain Injury Week kicks off today (Monday 8th May) and at the forefront is their brand new campaign; A New Me. The campaign has been organised to allow survivors of brain injuries as well as their families, friends and others affected to discuss and share their experiences in any way they feel comfortable.
This year, Headway, who are one of the UK’s leading brain injury charities, is encouraging supporters to get creative with the way in which they share their experiences, raise awareness, and tackle the misconceptions often made about brain injury survivors.
The submissions can be made in the form of artwork, videos, poems, podcasts and more. Throughout the week, Headway will be sharing some of the stories to show survivors that they are not alone and that there is support available should they need it. It will also be an opportunity to highlight that everyone’s experience of brain injury is different.
Carlos Lopez, a head injury specialist and associate partner at Farleys, commented,
“I have acted for many clients who have sustained varying forms of head injuries, arising from serious injury and clinical negligence. Whilst people understand the impact of a physical injury, such as a broken arm or leg, it can often be difficult to truly understand the impact of a head injury. Those who suffer with brain injury can be left with a variety of symptoms ranging from memory loss, anger management, lack of concentration, and sleep disturbance, to more significant complications, such a personality changes, cognitive and mental impairment and brain hypoxia, leading to conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. Having seen and experienced the effects of a brain injury, I became involved as a Trustee with Headway Preston and Chorley, who undertake fantastic work supporting local people in the area, who have head injuries.”
If you would like to get involved in the A New Me campaign, please send your submissions through the Headway website. We’re looking forward to seeing them! If that’s not your thing, Headway are also running a Hats for Headway day on Friday 12th May, asking supporters to wear their silliest hats to work and school and make a £1 donation to the charity. There are also prizes up for grabs for the best photograph.
