Cosmetic treatments such as Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs), lip fillers and “vampire facials” have grown in popularity in recent years, driven in part by social media trends. While many procedures are carried out safely, reports of serious injuries and deaths have led the Government to announce plans for tougher regulation of the cosmetic treatment industry.
Under the proposed changes, only suitably qualified professionals will be able to carry out certain high-risk procedures. Treatments such as liquid BBLs, deep chemical peels and some laser procedures will face stricter controls, while some cosmetic treatments will no longer be available to under-18s.
The reforms follow a number of high-profile incidents involving life-changing injuries and fatalities. Sadly, we continue to see cases where cosmetic treatments have resulted in complications such as infection, scarring, nerve damage, disfigurement and psychological harm.
While not every poor outcome amounts to negligence, treatment providers have a duty to meet appropriate standards of care and ensure patients understand the risks involved.
