Background
Client B was employed as a welder at a factory in Blackburn when he sustained a serious injury to his right hand during the course of his employment. On the day of the accident, an office worker approached him with a request to urgently weld several small inserts. In an effort to assist and complete the task efficiently, Client B prepared the jig, tacked it into position, and welded it to the workbench before beginning the job.
While carrying out the welding work, Client B accidentally dropped one of the small inserts. As he bent down to retrieve it, the weld securing the jig unexpectedly failed. The jig detached and fell directly onto his right hand. The force of the impact caused a crushing injury to one of his fingers, resulting in significant trauma and permanent damage. He required medical treatment and a period of recovery, and he continues to experience lasting effects from the injury.
The consequences of the accident extended well beyond Client B’s working life. Outside of his employment, he was a highly skilled and creative individual who spent much of his spare time 3D printing and producing intricate models and designs. This hobby required precision and fine motor control, both of which were severely affected by the injury. The damage to his finger significantly reduced his ability to continue this pastime at the same level, impacting his quality of life and personal enjoyment.
How Farleys were able to help
Client B instructed Paul Mulderrig of Farleys’ personal injury team to pursue a claim against his employer. Liability was admitted at an early stage by the employer’s insurer, who then entered into constructive negotiations. Through careful handling of the case, Paul successfully secured a settlement of £20,000 in compensation, helping Client B move forward following his injury.
