This week, road safety charity, Brake, launched the UK’s biggest annual road safety event. Road Safety Week was first founded in 1997 and has, for the past 19 years, been used to “inspire communities to take action on road safety and promote lifesaving messages.”
This years’ campaign is centred on asking road users to make the Brake Pledge. The Brake Pledge sets out six promises; slow, sober, secure, silent, sharp and sustainable, which can be made by not only drivers but everyone, to help make the roads a safer place.
Road Safety Facts and Statistics
- One in four fatal crashes in Great Britain are said to be caused by drivers breaking the speed limit or driving too fast for the conditions.
- One in seven road deaths are caused by drivers who have driven while over the drink and drive limit.
- 21% of car occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts.
- Drivers are 3 times more likely to be killed at the wheel if they are also performing a complex secondary task such as using a mobile phone.
- 2,900 casualties on the road are caused by poor driver vision every year.
- 5,000 deaths every year have been attributed to road transport pollution.
These facts have all been highlighted in Brake’s campaign in the hope that they will make drivers think twice before making these mistakes on the road in future.
