What is “Decent Work”?
Decent Work continues to attract the attention of policy makers internationally, nationally and locally. But how does this filter down effectively into the workplace, and particularly for those responsible for people management?
Internationally, Decent Work has been a United Nations sustainability goal for two decades, and has attracted renewed attention with this year’s publication of the International Labour Organisation’s ‘Work for Brighter Future’ report. The UN define Decent Work as freely chosen and productive, allowing for social dialogue, ensuring human rights and offering a safety net of social protection.
In the UK the ‘Taylor Review’ of Good Work (2017) and the Carnegie Trust/RSA’s ‘Measuring Good Work’ (2018) reports have explored aspects of what Decent Work can mean in our national context and in Greater Manchester, the Mayor has recently launched a Good Employment Charter which seeks to improve the quality of work in the region.
Despite such policy moves, there are still grave concerns about how changes in the labour market are adversely affecting the working lives of many who are in precarious employment, such as the gig economy, for example.
