It has been announced this morning that Blackburn with Darwen Council are to cut 500 jobs over the next two years as part of measures to cut £30 million in costs. Further job losses at the Council were rumoured in January, but were confirmed by council leader Kate Hollern, this morning.
This latest announcement comes two years after Blackburn with Darwen Council announced 1000 job losses under initial austerity measures.
If you are faced with the threat of redundancy, is important to understand your legal position and rights. For example, you need to consider your entitlements for notice pay, statutory redundancy pay and other monetary entitlements.
Redundancy carries a raft of procedures and processes, which you need to be aware of in order to ensure that your employer followed them fairly and in accordance with employment law. In addition, if your employer is seeking to reduce the length of time it may take to reduce their workforce, they may look to utilise compromise agreements (also known as settlement agreements). If you are presented with a compromise agreement, it is a legal requirement that you seek advice from an employment expert so that you fully understand the agreement you are entering into.
