The government has announced that new minimum wage rates will apply from this October. The following increases in the National Minimum Wage will be payable to UK employees from the 1st October 2011:

  • the adult National Minimum Wage (NMW) for all workers aged 21 and over will increase by 15p an hour to £6.08;
  • The statutory wage for those aged 18 to 20 years will increase by 6p to £4.98 an hour;
  • the rate for 16- and 17-year-olds will increase by 4p to £3.68 an hour;
  • the rate for apprentices will increase by 10p to £2.60 an hour

The increases, proposed by the Low Pay Commission and confirmed by the government last week, are thought to be likely to affect 1 million workers in the UK.
