Aug 2008 - More Success for Farleys' SCU

FARLEYS' Special Casework Unit have notched up yet another success after a jury took less than 3 days to acquit Baber Qasam of conspiring to murder following a 7-week trial at Preston Crown Court.

Mr Qasam had been accused of requesting the execution of a convicted drug dealer in Blackburn whilst he himself was serving a lengthy prison sentence. The prosecution was based, to a large extent, on the cell siting of mobile phones. The Crown alleged that mobile phones, unlawfully in the possession of serving prisoners, had been used to organise and recruit three Manchester hit men. The would-be assassins travelled to Blackburn in February 2007 and fired two shots but missed their intended target.

Our Special Casework Unit was recommended to Mr Qasam and Kevin Preston led the defence team. Kevin comments: "This is a very pleasing result achieved on the strength of hard work and in-depth analysis of complex evidence. The prosecution was flawed from the very outset in that the Crown wrongly believed that Mr Qasam had a motive to involve himself in such a scheme. Despite the prosecution recognising halfway through the trial that they had got that wrong they continued refusing to acknowledge to the jury that the case had been brought on a false premise. The jury, it would appear, were not fooled."
