What is Workplace Discrimination?
The most commonly encountered forms of workplace discrimination are:
- Racial discrimination
- Age discrimination
- Sexual discrimination
- Sexual orientation discrimination
- Disability discrimination
- Religion or belief discrimination
Unlike some other forms of employment related claims, discrimination claims are not contingent on length of service and can even be brought during the recruitment process. Discrimination can be defined as 'direct', 'indirect' or can present itself in the form of 'harassment'.
The Law and Discrimination - The Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act, brought into force on 1st October 2010, covers all forms of discrimination in employment and protects workers throughout the entire employment relationship - from recruitment to dismissal.
Discrimination in the workplace is a serious issue and consequently, employers can face unlimited fines if it can be proven that they have not taken the necessary steps to prevent employee discrimination.
